ICT – Blog

Today I installed and activated VirtualBox on muffin.jdj.

  • Resource: https://www.linuxcapable.com/how-to-install-virtualbox-7-0-on-fedora-linux/
  • # dnf upgrade –refresh
  • # reboot
  • # dnf install @development-tools
  • # dnf install kernel-devel kernel-headers dkms qt5-qtx11extras elfutils-libelf-devel zlib-devel
  • # wget http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/rpm/fedora/virtualbox.repo -P /etc/yum.repos.d/
  • # dnf upgrade –refresh -> Error
  • # dnf list Virtual* -> Error
  • # vi /etc/yum.repos.d/virtualbox.repo
    • Replace $releasever with 38; apparently, VirtualBox is not yet available for Fedora 39.
  • # dnf list Virtual* -> OK for VirtualBox-7.0
  • # dnf install VirtualBox-7.0
  • # systemctl enable vboxdrv –now
  • # systemctl status vboxdrv -> OK
  • I did not install the VirtualBox 7.0 Extension Pack
  • # vi /etc/group -> OK
  • # reboot [logout/login would suffice]
  • [~jan] groups -> jan vboxusers libvirt -> OK
  • [~jan] virtualbox -> OK -> created and booted new machine from old ISO Live image -> boots OK
  • [~jan] From GUI -> same thing -> OK
  • Last steps created ‘VirtualBox VMs’, so I moved it to /mnt/muffin.jdj/vm/:
    • # mkdir /mnt/muffin.jdj/vm/jan
    • # chown jan:jan /mnt/muffin.jdj/vm/jan/
    • [~jan] mv VirtualBox\ VMs /mnt/muffin.jdj/vm/jan/
    • [~jan] ln -s /mnt/muffin.jdj/vm/jan/VirtualBox\ VMs
    • Tested => OK
    • Removed test VM => OK
