Right after my last walk to the waste container and while backing up content and pushing it to this web site, I can now declare myself a paperless HAM. Over the past three weeks or so, I got rid of all physical documentation on instruments, HAM gear, ancient projects or just plain thoughts put on paper. Replaced by endless bit arrays either obtained by scanning or by downloading.
I must have scanned over a thousand pages and downloaded tens of documents (the latter to prevent me from having it to scan myself). Highlights (if you will) of the scanning activity were service manuals for the Yeasu FT-208R and the Rohde&Schwarz ESH-3 Test Receiver.
It feels as if I finished something big and important, despite the fact that I still stubbornly prefer reading and studying from paper, and prefer pencil and paper for designing or, say, just doing some (simple) math. But with dozens of high-end (yet old) instruments, a couple of transceivers and dozens of past projects, it is just impossible to have all documentation physically at hand in a small hobby loft. It would take fifty A4 binders, and that’s a conservative estimate. And in this case, it is either all or nothing for me, and all digital it has become. So I finally got rid of the final ten or so binders. At last; I should have done this years ago :-)…
Remarkably, I was one of the first to purchase a scanner with ADF in order to get rid of the massive amount of personal administration that only grew larger and larger. Likewise, to ditch my Vinyl, CDs, DVDs once they were all ripped. Too bad it took me almost thirty years in total, but this is just one of the last steps towards the fully digital experience my kids and so many of my young colleagues are already accustomed to :-)…
I still have a drawer stuffed with those annoying Safety Instructions and manuals in languages that use complete paintings as characters… And while I’m at it, just above it (it’s a chest of two drawers) reside over a hundred cables and connectors just to remain backwards compatible (you know, including that high-end Monster SCART to RGB patch cable you thought would finally solve all your video incompatibilities for the foreseeable future).
So, still work to do, but I’m almost there (‘story of my life’)…
Today, I promoted my WordPress site to be at the root of the jandejongh.eu site. In other words, instead of using https://jandejongh.eu/wordpress to reach the WordPress site, it is now simply https://jandejongh.eu. A major improvement, since this is the way I want to be reached.
How?
I’m using a Fedora-33 with stock-installed Apache httpd and wordpress (from Fedora repos). Here’s what worked for me:
Comment out all contents of /etc/httpd/conf.d/welcome.conf. This was still on my list; the welcome.conf file presents the default page hinting at further steps to populate an Apache deployment still without (other) content.
Enter the site’s top-level address (https://jandejongh.eu) in both fields in the WordPress Settings form:
Replace Alias /wordpress /usr/share/wordpress with Alias / /usr/share/wordpress/ in the top line (or thereabout) of /etc/httpd/conf.d/wordpress.conf. The final / appeared crucial in the alias statement.
Today, as part of my larger objective to archive my past (HAM) projects, I scanned various documents related to a project Frank van Vliet, pf0a nowadays, and I undertook around early 1999. I actually think more people were involved (like Vincent and Jurgen), so I hope I’m not failing on the credits here…
The idea was simple: We would build a 1 kW (or 400W legal-limit, if you prefer) Power Amplifier for 144 Mhz around “The Russian Tube” that became available in rather large quantities around that time. In those days, I had the ability, financial means, interest, and willpower to deploy a serious 2-meter station…
As far as I can recall, we managed to design and order the HV transformer (I still have one!) and the custom-made combi-transformer for auxiliary (screen/control grid and heater). My job was to order the latter transformer and design the screen-grid power supply. So I designed the circuit, with quite some safety measures, and the PCB, and built (at least) one prototype.
Unfortunately, due to personal issues later in 1999, I had to abandon the project (and HAM as a whole for several years), but I think I managed to hand over the results to Frank and others, and I think Frank managed to complete the build for the (pe0mar) Lighthouse Contest Group. The combi-transformers (I’m pretty sure I had to order 10 of them) and the screen-supply prototype I built seem to have gone lost after 1999, but I still have to HV transformer waiting for a new destiny…
Current Status and Future of this Project
Well, I’m no longer that active as a HAM anymore, and I no longer have the antenna options I used to have. So finishing this project would only serve as a rehabilitation of my ego for bailing out in 1999. Hence, for now, the project is archived as unfinished.
A couple of weeks ago, I joined to the Time Ghost Army, pretty much in reaction to Spartacus Olsson’s brilliant handling of the Wannsee conference in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd1gHrQdeuI (War Against Humanity sub-series). Citing Sparty from that episode @00:44:
“It’s a meeting of bureaucrats to settle the logistics of industrialized murder on a scale never seen before. It will be remembered as the Wannsee Conference.”
This hit me a lot, and at that time, I wanted to write a blog post specifically describing that event, and how I felt about it; why it meant so much to me. But I found it hard to do so at that time.
So here’s another attempt. Unfortunately, I have to write this in Dutch first; I hope to translate it later.
Aanleiding
Al vroeg in mijn leven (geen idee, vanaf toen ik een jaar of acht was, denk ik) wist ik dat ik gemaakt was voor techniek en wiskunde. Ik vond het allemaal geweldig intessant. Ik had dan ook totaal geen moeite (nou ja…) met exacte vakken op de middelbare school: Ik wilde het gewoon allemaal snappen, en bleef lezen/leren tot ik het begreep, en soms (veel) meer dan dat. Met andere woorden, qua motivatie zat het helemaal goed, en daar kom je echt ver mee.
Ik richtte me totaal op de vakken (technisch, wiskunde) die voor mij interessant waren, en de rest (talen, geschiedenis, aardrijkskunde, godsdient, zelfs biologie, whatever) interesseerde mij niet zoveel, dus daarvoor was het zaak een zesje of zeventje te halen… Ik zou het later toch niet echt nodig hebben…
Echter, dit zou allemaal veranderen in de loop van mijn leven: Na mijn overgang naar 4VWO op de middelbare school in Etten-Leur (de KSE), werd ik geplaatst op de ‘Oversteek’ groep op het Internaat waar ik verbleef (Edward Poppe, Etten-Leur). Ik raakte daar al snel bevriend met Pedro, en tot mijn stomme verbazing (mogelijk achteraf hoor) vonden we elkaar in een gezamenlijke passie: Geschiedenis, en dan met name de Tweede Wereldoorlog en fascisme. Niet dat we nou direct aanhangers waren van Mussolini, Hitler, Mussert, maar we deelden domweg een grenzeloze interesse in deze onderdelen van de geschiedenis. We werden daarbij ook nog eens gevoed door twee van de beste leraren die je je kon wensen: Bovee en (ik denk) Grosveld. Overigens waren er ook anderen met wie ik onwijs kon discussieren (Pierre, Harry). Voor maanden, zo niet jaren, hielden we elkaar scherp als het ging om de diverse conferenties (Jalta, von Ribbentrop, en dus ook Wannsee) die zo’n belangrijke rol speelden tijdens of in aanloop naar WO-2.
Al met al besloot ik een van de usual suspects in een exact vakkenpakket te laten vallen (ik meen dat dat dan Biologie of Economie moet zijn geweest), en Geschiedenis op te nemen in mijn eindexamenpakket. Dankjewel Pedro!
Na het behalen van mijn VWO diploma, verwaterde helaas het contact met Pedro. Maar de passie voor Geschiedenis (en ook politiek eigenlijk) was niet meer te stuiten.
Bezoek aan Wannsee
Jaren later, rond 2013 denk ik, deed ik met Hermine een stedentrip naar Berlijn. Ik was daar nooit eerder geweest, en het was een topreis. Met mijn geschiedenis-bagage, overtuigde ik haar samen een bezoek te brengen aan de Wannsee villa… Eigenlijk wist ik zelf ook niet waar ik aan begon, maar ik wilde er gewoon echt heen, wilde het zien en (nou ja) meemaken. Ik herinner me dat we een bus moesten nemen vanuit Berlijn en moesten uitstappen in the middle of nowhere (in de regen); slechts een klein bordje leidde ons naar de villa.
Het bezoek aan de Wannsee villa was overweldigend, en greep ons allebei heel erg aan. Ondanks de zeer subtiele bewegwijzering hadden “de Duitsers” in de villa volledig uitgepakt met een expositie over de conferentie en de Shoa in het algemeen. Waar je misschien aanvankelijk nog denkt dat je van een afstand een stukje geschiedenis van dichtbij meemaakt, kom je naar buiten met (een stukje van) het verdriet dat deze conferentie, deels, heeft veroorzaakt. Alle credits voor “de Duitsers” dus; echt een geweldige expositie.
Het bezoek aan Wannsee heeft daarna voor mij veel impact gehad. Het heeft ervoor gezorgd dat ik vanaf dat moment altijd het menselijke aspect van Geschiedenis ben gaan voelen. In 4VWO kun je nog van een afstand praten over Wannsee, Babi Yar, en er niets bij voelen. Dat is nu dus allemaal allemaal anders…
Het maakt mij een slecht potentieel historicus, omdat ik de emoties te veel toe laat. Maar gelukkig wel meer mens…
Wat maakt Wannsee zo bijzonder?
Hoewel deze post niet zozeer gaat over het historische perspectief, wil ik toch graag ingaan op het belang van de Wannsee Conferentie, en de reden waarom het mij zo raakt of op zijn minst bezig houdt.
De Wannsee Conferentie ging niet over de vraag of de Joden moesten worden uitgeroeid; deze beslissing was al jaren eerder genomen in Nazi Duitsland, zij het niet met zoveel woorden in openbaarheid… De vraag was hoe. Dit wordt ook expliciet gemeld door Sparty in de War Against Humanity episode.
Dit maakt het eigenlijk alleen maar erger: Niet of de Joden moeten worden uitgeroeid, maar de meest efficiente manier waarop was het onderwerp van discussie. Meer dan tien bureaucraten buigen zich over deze vraag, en onder het genot van een drankje en lekkere hapjes, worden aspecten als hoe, waar en wanneer de Joden te vermoorden behandeld, in minder dan twee uur. En, als je ‘The Conspiracy’ moet geloven, wist Heydrich hierbij ook nog de laatste haarden van verzet te breken. Verzet uit juridische hoek (Kritzinger, Stuckart), nota bene!
Al met al maakt dit voor mij de Wannsee Conferentie als het absolute toppunt van ontmenselijking.
Het roept bij mij ook de vraag op, raar genoeg, wat je onze nieuwe generatie nou moet bijbrengen over de 2e Wereldoorlog. Ik heb van deze oorlog nooit “last” van gehad; mijn beide ouders hebben de oorlog wel meegemaakt, maar zijn er niet (ogenschijnlijk) heel erg door geraakt. En naarmate de jaren verstrijken, zal het over te brengen beeld over de 2e Wereldoorlog en de Shoa steeds compacter moeten worden; er komt immers steeds meer belangrijke geschiedenis bij…
Toch heb ik nog steeds het gevoel dat de Wannsee Conferentie een essentieel onderdeel hoort te zijn van de geschiedenis die we aan onze kinderen doorgeven. Het geeft aan waartoe en waarschuwt waarvoor de mensheid in staat is…
Wannsee: Niet vergeten dus!

Altijd persoonlijk enorm geinteresseerd gebleven in geschiedenis, met name wo-2, maar zoals gezegd met het emotionele aspect er nu bij. Voor wat betreft Wannsee uiteraard de diverse films meerdere malen gezien..
De aflevering waarin Sparty de Wannsee conferentie behandelde hakte er dus nogal in!
